Help/ Frequently Asked Questions

What makes your training different?

  • Alan Stein is a former college basketball player (Elon University) who is educated in strength and conditioning. His passion, knowledge, and experience for both are unparalleled. As a former player, Alan understands the specific needs of basketball players of all ages and levels. He takes pride in delivering the most effective workouts in the industry while at the same time giving an outstanding level of customer service; all of which is accomplished at a very competitive cost.

Do you do basketball training?

  • Yes and no. Yes, Alan’s program was developed to be specific to the needs of basketball players, but no, he does not do skill work (basketball fundamentals like shooting or ball handling). Alan addresses every component for improvement except for the skill work; warm-up, flexibility, hand/eye coordination, reaction, agility, quickness, strength, and basketball specific conditioning and movement.

Is your training individualized for each player?

  • Yes. Although the general training template and goals are the same for almost all players (get stronger, jump higher, be quicker, etc.), each and every player is different and has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. While the overall skeleton of the program is similar, Alan does individualize for those specific differences.

Do I have to be an “elite” player to train with you?

  • Not at all. While Alan does work with high school and college All Americans and NBA players, he trains younger and more inexperienced players too. All that is needed is to be coachable, have a strong work ethic, and a passion to be the best player you can be!

What age is it safe for a player to start training?

  • This is a difficult question to answer generically as it really depends on the physiological (and sometimes psychological) maturity of the child. For the most part, most children are ready to participate in a supervised, structured training program around 11 or 12 years old. Most of those workouts are focused on teaching proper movement mechanics (how run and cut properly), instilling a work ethic, and most importantly having fun. When most players turn 13 or 14 years old they are usually ready to start a structured strength training based program.

Where are workouts held?

  • Alan does his training at Rockville Fitness, located at 4961 Nicholson Court, Rockville, MD 20852. Rockville Fitness is located near White Flint mall and is easily accessible from 495. Alan regularly trains players from Bowie, northern Virginia, and Washington, DC. Alan can also be hired to conduct team and large group workouts at your practice, camp or clinic.

When are workouts held?

  • Training is done by appointment only and depends on schedules and availability.

Is the training one on one?

  • While occasionally workouts are one on one, most of Alan’s sessions involve training 2-3 players during the same workout. He has found this small group dynamic to be the most effective method for maximizing improvement as it raises the overall intensity of the workout. Alan does his absolute best to group players of similar age and level. Despite the group format, Alan still addresses each player’s specific individual needs.

What if I live far away?

  • If you live outside of the Washington area and can’t train with Alan in person, you still have a few options. First and foremost, Alan has an entire series of DVD’s (on this site) designed to help players and coaches of all ages and levels work on every aspect of their basketball strength & conditioning. If you are looking for an actual training program, his MVP program is a 12 week training program designed to improve a player’s overall strength, power, and explosiveness. Alan also has an extensive travel schedule and works camps and clinics around the world. His travel schedule is on this site as well.

How long until I see results?

  • This is another difficult question to answer. How quickly a player will see results varies and depends on factors such as age, current fitness level, training frequency, training intensity, overall activity level, nutritional habits, and of course… genetics. However, most of Alan’s players begin to see and feel a “difference” in a few weeks.
