Basketball coaches are in a constant search to find the best methods of improving athletic performance for their players. After all, with all else equal, a bigger – faster – stronger – more conditioned player will dominate on the court. While there is constant debate on the ideal way to improve sport specific speed, power and strength, I believe an overlooked area of training preparation and performance is of a comprehensive warm-up and the role it plays in maximizing each and every workout, practice, and game.

“Even if you are the quickest guy on the field or court if you are the slowest guys to react that will negate how quick you really are. So you need to improve both reaction time and quickness. By taking a comprehensive approach you are going to become as quick as you can be,” says Alan Stein, Co-owner of Elite Athlete Training and expert basketball strength coach. “That’s why we incorporate reaction into our quickness drills either through verbal or visual cues.”

Agility and Quickness Drills
Agility and quickness training is necessary for basketball players at every level. Agility is the ability to change direction rapidly, efficiently, and explosively while maintaining body control at all times. Most of the agility seen in basketball is based on reacting to an opponent, both defensively and offensively. These movements can be short, fast, and unpredictable. Quickness is the ability to react and respond in the shortest time possible. Thus, it is important to incorporate reaction -type drills in one’s agility and quickness training. Incorporating drills that require players to “read and react” will help to improve your team’s agility and quickness.
